Kanota were successfully used as a source of monosomics. Kanota oats have been the standard for the northern San Joaquin Valley for well over 50 years. The main reason for their popularity is their fine stems and ability to grow on dry, sandy soils where other oats cannot. Sierra is a spring oat. It was released by the California AES and the USDA-ARS in 1961. It is derived from a cross between a mutant monosomic of Kanota (Avena byzantina L.) and a rust resistant selection of wild oat (A. fatua L.). Sierra has medium early maturity, heading 3-4 days later than Kanota and Swan.

Other studies have shown that oats harvested at the boot stage have a low DM, are highly palatable, and have high levels of protein.

Kanota oats

YIELD DATA. Kanota is early maturing, being about three days later than Montezuma. Plant height is similar to A cool season annual cereal grain. Kanota Oats are used primary for hay and forage production. Their fine stems make a highly sought after horse hay. Kanota Oats mature at about the same time Montezuma Oats. In colder areas Kanota Oats should be planted in the spring.

This suggests a hybrid origin for Kanota, as well as for other strains of Fulghum, and may explain its geographic adaptation which seems to be between the Avena sativa or northern and the Avena sterilis or southern oat district. early maturity makes it a desirable oat for double cropping on irrigated lands. Kanota History: A selected strain of Fulghum released by the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station. Certi- fied seed of Kanota was released in 1928 in California where it soon became a leading variety. Description: Tall, medium stemmed, sparsely leafed.

Abstract Not Available – First paragraph follows: Oats harvested at the 18% flower stage produced the greatest nutrient yield in studies—feeding trials, digestion trials and chemical analyses of the forage—to evaluate the feeding value of oat hay.

First Planting Here in 1959 The bulk F7 seed of Kanota X Wild Oats was first planted at the Mesa Experiment Station in Decem-ber, 1959 and has been advanced one generation each year. One thou-sand random head selections were made from the bulk F7 and planted in head rows the following season. Harvested at the 18%-20% flower stage Kanota oat hay had a greater feeding value than when harvested at other stages of maturity. yield of 9,600 pounds of dry matter-an excellent yield for this area-indicates that plant growth conditions for the oats were optimum.
